Chikmagalur Resorts – Gudlu Nature Resort Near Mudigere

Gudlu is a 16-acre nature resort in Chikmagalur district, set on a forested hillock at Devaramane near Mudigere, in Karnataka’s Western Ghats. Eight air-conditioned cottages, a private 6-acre lake and a stretch of Shola forest make it a quieter alternative to the Chikmagalur resorts clustered closer to town — roughly 40 km from Chikmagalur town and 16 km from Mudigere town.

Stays here are all-inclusive. One tariff covers your cottage, every meal from lunch through next-morning breakfast, and every activity on the property: kayaking and boating on the lake, the swimming pool, cycling, trampoline, carrom, chess, and a private campfire for your family or group. Nothing inside the resort is charged extra.

With eight cottages sleeping up to four adults each, and space for up to 30 adults on an exclusive buyout, Gudlu suits a family holiday, a couples’ getaway or a corporate team outing equally well. There is no television in the cottages, but Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, so you can stay connected while enjoying a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Inside the Shola Forests of the Western Ghats

Gudlu sits inside one of India’s oldest living landscapes — the Shola evergreen forests and grasslands of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage region. The cottages were built to sit lightly in it: eight air-conditioned, eco-friendly units spread out along a wooded hillock rather than stacked into a block, so each one keeps its own view and its own quiet.

That setting is the practical difference between Gudlu and most resorts in Chikmagalur: 16 acres of forest and grassland for eight cottages, a 6-acre lake used only by resort guests, and a drive that takes you past Devaramane rather than through town. It is an easy weekend escape from Bengaluru or Mangaluru for anyone looking for quiet, cool air and a bit of adventure. Mullayanagiri, Karnataka’s tallest peak, is about 70 km away for those who want to add it to the trip.

Cottages & Accommodation at Gudlu

Each cottage is about 750 sq ft, air-conditioned, with a king-size bed, a queen-size sofa-cum-bed, a private patio and a backyard — comfortable for two, and up to four adults with extra bedding. There is no television; there is a stocked bathroom, blackout curtains, an intercom to the kitchen and housekeeping, and a great deal of birdsong.

All eight cottages are named after a bird of the Shola forest, across four view categories. Keep your binoculars handy — you may well spot your cottage’s namesake in the canopy outside it.

Devaramane Viewpoint — 5 km

Devaramane takes its name from the Kannada for “house of God”, and the small, well-kept Kalabhairaveshwara temple on the hill is what most visitors come for. There is a lake in front of the temple and a hill behind it, and the approach road is in good condition. Roughly 200 m past the temple is the Devaramane viewpoint itself, which opens out over green hillsides, streams and lakes — the easiest sunrise stop from the resort, five kilometres away.

About 250km from Bangalore, it makes for a good weekend trip away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although it’s not a popular trail among trekkers, Ettina Bhuja offers scenic landscapes at about 1300m altitude and features a mosaic of grassland and forest patches in undulating terrain. One can find bamboo and cane plantations on the way to the top. Trek along this pleasant terrain to the sound of chirping birds in the lap of nature. Once you reach the top which looks like the hump of an ox, feast yourself to panoramic views of dense green forests.
